Obituary for George Alps Sr.

George Alfred Alps, Sr., passed away on October 6, 2013, he was 86 years old and was born in Gill, Colorado. His parents were John Calvin and Bessie Bell Cearley Alps. George went to school in Loveland, Colorado before moving to the western slope. He married Jo Ann Compton, the love of his life, in Loma, Colorado near Fruita, in 1944. He was in the Army during World War II and received an Honorable discharge in 1946. He moved to the Longmont area after the war and did mining in Jamestown, worked on the pipe lines, and did some plumbing prior to farming and ranching 10 miles west of Longmont until his health declined in 2005. He also played the guitar and liked to sing western and fun songs for children with his wife Jo Ann yodeling along. He loved taking people on rides in his truck to the mountains, on picnics and ice skating. He did the Alps reunion in Loveland with his daughter Georgetta for 30 years. He enjoyed keeping busy and being with his children and family.
He was always there for someone that needed help; friend or relative. George and Jo Ann had ten children, 7 girls, two of which were identical twins and 3 boys. Georgetta (Pastor Jim Johnston, Sr.) Annetta (John Krieger), Betty Jo (Rob Cole), Wuanita Trueblood, George Jr. (Kathy Alps), Clifford (Ann Alps), Irene (Donald Poteete) and Dorothy Rine. He has 21 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren, three former daughters in law Candy Alps, Velma Alps and Linda Alps. He is further survived by his brother John Alps of Madras, Oregon and two sisters Arvilla Guab and Juanita Abbott of Kelso-Longview, Washington and many nephews, nieces and cousinsHe was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jo Ann, his son William Alps, Sr., his daughter Wanda Larson, his son-in-law Terry Trueblood, step-sisters Geneva Macky, Rowena Armstrong, sisters Leevonia Casteel and LaVon Sapp.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 11, 2013 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1000 15th Avenue, Longmont, with Pastor James Johnston, Sr. officiating. Inurnment will be at Foothills Gardens of Memory.
