Obituary for Jean Howe

Jean W. Howe of Moorpark, California, died October 27 surrounded by her family at her son Mark and daughter in law Sandy’s home. She was 79.

Jean was born on April 20, 1934 in Holyoke, Colorado to Sherman Walrod and Ruth Markham Walrod. She grew up on the eastern plains of Colorado, graduating from Burlington High School, Burlington, Colorado.

Each school year concluded with a train ride to Denver, where she was picked up by her loving grandparents and aunt and uncle. She would spend each summer in her beloved Longmont. Her closest friends were here and they would spend countless hours, riding their horses and swimming at Sunset “pond” and Eldorado Springs.
Following high school, she enrolled and attended the University of Colorado. She would cut her education short to marry George Howe on June 13, 1955 in Longmont. The Howe’s moved to Evanston, Illinois where George would complete his military commitment.

Jean and George returned to Longmont and purchased the Howe Mortuary, in 1958. Together they would operate the mortuary for the next 30 years. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran church, where she served in a number of capacities, including the Church Board for two terms. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, something she took great pride in, sponsoring many local girls to join and participate with this wonderful organization. For many years she was involved with PEO, including Chapter M, in Longmont. Jean was also active as a volunteer at the Longmont United Hospital.

Jean and George enjoyed a number of years at their second home in Kona, Hawaii. There they met another group of wonderful friends, enjoying the Pacific Ocean, the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands and endless golf games. However, they always returned to Colorado to spend an extended time each summer enjoying their many cherished Longmont friends. She loved being a Grammy and the special time she had with her grandchildren.

Poor health brought them closer to their sons on the mainland, settling in Southern California in 2007. George preceded her in death in 2008.

Surviving are her four sons; Geoffrey (Janet) Howe of Longmont; Bradley Howe of Boulder; Blake (Rhonda) Howe of Reno, Nevada; and Mark (Sandra) Howe of Moor Park, California; and 7 grandchildren Andrew, Mia, Kira, Ava, Claire, Reygan and Devyn.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 6 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Steve Berke officiating. Interment will be held at Mountain View Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, c/o Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman St., Longmont, Colorado 80501.
